Herceg Novi is a seaside town in Montenegro, at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor and at the foot of Mount Orjen. It is the administrative center of the village of Herceg Novi with a population of about 33,000. Herceg was known as Novi Castelnuovo ("new castle" in Italian) between 1482 and 1797, when it was part of the Ottoman Empire. Herceg Novi has a turbulent past, despite being one of the youngest settlements on the Adriatic. The history of diverse occupations has created a mixture of diverse and picturesque architectural styles in the city.
